Ecclesiastes figured this out first

I just discovered that Ecclesiastes 9:11 refers to this very concept of hidden evidence. I guess they lived in the same world we do today:

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

Of course, I don't ascribe to the full sense of this book in the bible; there is meaning to life, and if none attempted to succeed likely none would.
